50 YEAR CELEBRATION!!!

Get.  Out.

You guys - TRADER JOE'S IS 50 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!

Celebration sign at our local Trader Joe's (they also had balloons!)
Honestly, we had no idea.  I am just so thrilled to be back in the land of TJ's (home in Virginia after a long time away), so we went to the store closest to home, in Clarendon, VA.  Look what we saw before we even got on the elevator in the parking garage:

Party at Trader Joe's??  That elevator couldn't come fast enough!!!
PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I tell you, Trader Joe's Clarendon knows how to party!  For starters, they have a guy named GARY who works there who is a musician and he performs!  Like, IN THE STORE!!!  We were lucky enough to see him singing one other time and it was great.  Sadly, today we were there at the wrong time, but he was setting up as we left and he gave us a sneak peek at his set list:  all songs from 1967!!!  (Get it??  50 year anniversary, songs from 50 years ago...  Gary is clever that way!!) We are going to try and go back tomorrow and see him play.

They also are having a drawing where we miiiight win a great give bag full of TJ's merch or a gift card (fingers crossed...).

Also super cool, the employees all had 50 year TJ's t-shirts.  But ULTRA COOL was Kara, who went out of her way to totally bedazzle the hell out of her shirt!

Each letter is BEDAZZELED!  Seriously, I love it.  Adorable!

She even blinged up the BACK!

Seriously, the shininess of the shirt helped with the party vibe!!!

And guess what??  There are items on sale for .50 cents!!!  I mean, wowsa!!!

2 days only - 50 cent stuff!

For .50 cents each we got:

A baguette (which we are taking with us for a pre-show picnic when we see the remarkable David Sedaris perform tonight!).

Ooooh lala - a cheap baguette!
Get it while you can!
A mango.

Now that's CHEAP!
Spaghetti.

You HAVE to have spaghetti in the cupboard at all times, right?
Get some while it is on sale!
3 avocados (.50 cents each) which David was so psyched about that he juggled them.

Wheeeee!  AVOCADOS!
Corn.

And, get this, we got a dozen eggs, normally $1.29, BUT TODAY AND TOMORROW FIFTY CENTS!

Looks like we were not the only ones grabbing eggs
BARGAIN!
Now, I can't promise you that YOUR Trader Joe's will have these same items on sale.  Apparently each store is having special deals on different things.

And I certainly can't promise you the dulcet tones of Gary (cuz there is only one Gary...) or the blingy shirt of Kara (again, only one Kara...).  But I still say - YOU NEED TO GO TO YOUR TRADER JOE'S TONIGHT OR TOMORROW (August 19th and 20th, 2017) TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF JOE.

Cuz you know as well as I do, that deserves a party.

TJ's Neighbor Share Program - It's AMAZING!

Once again, my world's of KINDNESS and TRADER JOE'S collide midstream!!

Have you ever noticed a store hanging at your local Trader Joe's that talks about DONATIONS?  I saw them as we traveled around and popped into Trader Joe's all over the country last year.  I SAW the signs, but I didn't really PAY ATTENTION to them...

Most stores have these signs, but I never paid attention to them.  Until now!
So recently I decided to ask some questions and figure out what in the world TJ's donates.  I was very happy I asked, because it turns out they not only have cool employees, great food at good prices, and awesome wine - they also are SUPER KIND TO THEIR COMMUNITIES!!

Seriously, next time you shop at TJ's just take a second to thank them.  Not all stores bother to give back to the neighbors, but TJ's sure does.

Read about their Neighbor Share program at the link below and be inspired!

Donating Kindness

Thank You note hanging in the Clarendon store from a thankful artist.  :)

Day 364 - Chocolate Raspberry Tamales and WHAT I HAVE LEARNED from this blog

Here are a few things I have learned from this year long Trader Joe’s reviews project:
  • Even commitment phobics can manage to commit to something hard if they try.
  • Talking to strangers in grocery stores is fun (I actually knew this before this project, but this tooootally reinforced it for me).
  • People are seriously nutso for Trader Joe’s – I didn’t realize how huge a “thing” TJ’s was when I started!  I chose TJ’s as my “theme” for the project because we liked to shop there, we needed groceries, and it seemed “do-able”.  But throughout the course of the year I have seen what a CRAZE Trader Joe’s is!!  Guys, there are other review blogs (I have tried not to read many of them because I didn’t want them to influence my writing/opinions, plus I was already devoting enough of my time to a grocery store and didn’t need “homework” reading on top of it all!).  But seriously, like, there are a lot of people writing about Trader Joe’s online.  And get this – some people apparently TAPE THEMSELVES BRINGING HOME THEIR TJ’S STUFF!  I have not watched any of those videos, but since I am nearly done here and since they are out there online, I think we should check one out now.  Are you in?  I am gonna Google and post one here, get ready…HOLY SHIT GUYS, people are obsessed!!!  I am so glad I didn’t look at these before!  Hahahaha!  Look, this is a shorter video than many of them!!  "Haul" video  I am perhaps 1/1000th of a percentage as into Trader Joe’s as these people who videotape their purchases are…  They even have a FACEBOOK GROUP if you wanna join, it is called “Trader Joe’s and Other Groceries Hauls”.  It looks like it is a “closed group” so you need to ask to join, but you will have almost 1,300 friends in there if you do.  Hahaha – oh my.
  • Trader Joe’s has great employees.  I think I knew this fact before I started writing the blog, but it was reinforced by the many, many people who work at TJ’s that we met throughout the year.

Amy in Indy

Rebekah in Clarendon

The dancing parking lot guy at U Street in DC
  • Trader Joe’s treats their distribution centers as if they were Fort Knox.  There is a HUUUUGE one in Daytona Beach, Florida and I thought I would easily be able to go in and have a little tour.  I mean, we have toured several factories and always enjoyed ourselves.  But not a TJ’s distro center.  When I asked my local TJ’s manager if she could “hook me up” she gave me a phone number to call but warned me that it was highly unlikely…  I called several times.  It was BUSY.  Busy, as in, didn’t even roll to voicemail.  Busy.  So we drove out there.  It is HUMUNGOUS.  Two huge buildings.  Huge buildings that are not visitor friendly. But the security guard talked to us and was really nice J.

It is ultra super duper TOP secret!!

We FOUND the distribution center (now if only we could get a tour...)

  • People you meet online are fun.  I have never really talked with strangers online before.  I never dated online.  I only accept Facebook friend requests from people I know in “real life”.  So this blog was really my first experience of connecting with virtual strangers, and I loved it!

We got to meet Ttrockwood in person, but I feel like I know many more of you "virtually", too!

  • I am not the only person who decided to do one thing every single day of 2015 (see yesterday’s blog for info on a Washington Post article).

  • Many cities who do not have Trader Joe’s stores have ONLINE PETITIONS trying to convince corporate to build one in their area.  Again, another factoid I had no idea about until getting involved here.
  • I have secretly done two other things every single day of 2014 AND 2015, but I haven’t completed the 2014 ones because I HATE ENDINGS (see yesterday’s blog…) and I haven’t completed the 2015 one because ALL MY TIME HAS BEEN SPENT ON THIS TRADER JOE’S PROJECT!  However, now that I am finishing up here I hope to finish those other 2 projects, too!
  • And finally, a project of this scope takes way more time, energy, and focus than I ever dreamed it would.  Seriously waaaay more.
So now you know some of the things I learned, now let’s get to the second to the last review of the year!

Snap!  Look what we found at the Jacksonville Beach, FL store - CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY TAMALES!
Chocolate and Raspberry Tamales.  This is a rather kinky product that someone mentioned we should try, so we squeezed it in before the year finished.  Our friend Kathy is visiting us and after we picked her up at the Orlando airport we popped into the Winterpark, FL store.  It was fun to watch her reactions – Trader Joes’s is new to her J.  After we came back to the Cottage of Cheese (the Florida house) last night we were having sooooo much fun talking, laughing, and eating that I FORGOT to make and serve the chocolate raspberry tamales like I had planned!  So that could mean only one thing:  CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY TAMALES FOR BREAKFAST TODAY!  Hey, a reviewer has gotta do what a reviewer has gotta do!!  David and I have been known to dine on cupcakes or cake for breakfast, but Kathy is not that sort of girl, so the concept was a bit “off” to her.  J  She agreed to take a bite and be a guest reviewer though!  So here is how it went down:

Here it is before I unwrapped it - pretty!
David:  “As a dessert, which is how this is intended, I could see this if it was covered in a nice kind of custard-y sauce to kind of mellow it out.  But just eating it on its own – the first thing that strikes you is, wow, this is unpleasant…  And then you try and figure out, is that because of the RASPBERRY-ness or the CHOCOLATE-ness…  And then you hang in there…  You stay with it…  You chew it…  And eventually you go, you know, the raspberry-ness is raspberry!  You can’t blame a snake for being a snake!  It is a good raspberry.  The raspberry is OK.  I think it is the chocolate that I find not so good…  And it is very rich, not rich…  Really deeeeep, dark, chocolate.  And it is so….  It is kinda like puttin’ a spoon into a Hershey’s Cacao box and stuffin’ it in your mouth.  It is kinda too much without the…  It makes me feel like there might be some CAROB goin’ on.  You know that thing that is trying too hard, saying, “Maybe I’m chocolate”.  But it could be that it is just such INTENSE chocolate.  That might be it – it is just really INTENSE and I guess I wasn’t ready for it.  But I have to say that the 2nd and 3rd bites, when it was less warm and less gelatinous, nicer.  Would I buy this again?  Probably not.  Would I eat this again if this were in front of me??  Probably so (editor’s note – that is good to hear, because we all shared ONE and there are THREE more to eat in the freezer…).  Overall I would give this a 3.”

David eating his first bite of tamale - he was not so impressed in the beginning....
Kathy:  “I had the same reaction as David to the raspberries.  That was the first thing that I was aware of was the RASPBERRIES, and I was like, yeah, I don’t think so…  They were really tart.  And then I got to where I kind of, yeah, that’s good!  It is good that there are raspberries in there and they are actual raspberries.  You can taste them!  So that is probably a good thing.  But it was kind of, a little bit intense right off the bat.

For me, the CHOCOLATEYNESS is great.  But it is something about the texture…  Like, chocolate raspberry CAKE – WONDERFUL.  Chocolate raspberry BRULEE – WONDERFUL.  But this – I don’t know what it was trying to be…  Chocolate and raspberry I don’t think were INTENDED to be in a tamale…  So that is where – chocolate is GOOD.  Raspberry is GOOD.  But the VENUE, the VEHICLE in which they were featured – NOT SO GOOD.  Something about the texture…  It should either be a CAKE or something FUDGY.  This was some weird in-between that didn’t really make sense for my mouth.  I give this a 2.5.”

Kathy has chosen to remain anonymous, this mermaid puppet I got for Christmas is standing in for her.
Me:  we do not eat tamales of any kind very often, and I liked that this came wrapped up (tamale style).  To me it felt like a little package, a GIFT as it were!  It was fun to cook (I steamed it) and unwrap it.  And putting chocolate in a tamale to me is innovative and creative.  I like that it is something NEW.  (Kathy had to interrupt me here and exclaim, “Yeah!!!  But that’s like, “Nobody has ever done a hamburger where the BUN is 2 pieces of fried chicken, so let’s do THAT!!!”.  And this same conversation we are having is what they had before deciding to do THAT and it was not a good idea.  It’s like – TAMALES are good, CHOCOLATE is good, RASPBERRIES are good.  That does NOT mean you need to put them all together!!!!”.)  Apparently Kathy is not on board with the inventiveness factor here J.

Here it is all unwrapped
Kathy is counting calories using an app called Calorie King ($4.99 to download) and her take on it is that this tamale is “not worthy of the calories”.  One thing I do agree with Kathy on is that the texture is WEIRD.  But it is a tamale- like texture, it is just weird to have it with a chocolate taste.  But they nailed getting the appropriate texture for the tamale venue, but the question is “how appropriate is that texture for the chocolate taste”.

The molten chocolate when it is heated I liked.  I think this would be nice with a custard drizzled on top, whipped cream, or even a Greek yogurt…  Kathy suggests béchamel sauce or crème fraiche but I had to point out that her calorie app may have literally exploded at the addition of those decadent ingredients.  I personally think all of those ideas would help this product but I would not recommend putting a chocolate or fudge sauce on it, it is chocolatey enough without that.

Works out to a buck a tamale - cheap dessert
Unwrapping this tamale was like a present on a plate.  But it was kind of like the present your Aunt from Iowa gives you and she doesn’t know you very well.  It was nice to have a GIFT, but maybe a piece of cheesecake would have been even better.  As Kathy says, “It was cool to have this once.”  Because of my failing to serve this as a DESSERT and having to instead make it for a BREAKFAST, I am going to bump up the average score by half a point because I feel this would have been better received if not served in the morning.  I give these tamales a 3.

I just want to make sure you knew we didn't ONLY eat chocolate for breakfast!
We picked this papaya from the tree and ATE IT - yummy!

Price – $3.99
Rating (average of 3 raters, with half a point added for my timing faux pas) - 3

Day 327 - Benefactor Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon (2014)

David and I ENJOY grocery shopping.  I know that many people dislike it.  I don’t really “get” that because from my vantage point it is fun!  David and I like it so much that we went grocery shopping on our very first date some 27 years ago!  (Note:  we did NOT shop at a Trader Joe’s on that first date, we went to a Wegman’s in Rochester, NY J ).

Anyway, one fun thing about grocery shopping is that sometimes the store becomes a disco!  Here you see David cutting loose on the “dance floor” at Trader Joe’s (that’s one benefit of having most of the carts out of the cart coral – it becomes a dance floor!).

I guess the moral of this "we love grocery shopping" story is this:  life is what you make of it.  ENJOY yourself.

Go David!  Bust a move!!!  (Clarendon, VA store)
Ok, we haven’t had a wine review since Friday, so let’s fix that!  :)

This is a Cabernet Sauvignon from Southeastern Austrialia.  Well, I mean, WE didn’t go to Southeastern Australia to buy it, but that is where it originated…  Boy I WISH we could go to Australia to pick up a bottle of wine!!  This was our first time tasting this one and I really like it!

This wine is good!  It is fruity.  It is complex without being headache inducingly complex (like the SAT test).  We are reviewing this without looking at the price tag, and David is guessing it is a $9 or $10 bottle of wine.  If it is less than that it is a good bargain!

Isn't this artwork GREAT??

Here's a more "regular" price sign

The label states that this wine is a “celebration of reciprocity”.  Well that sounds pretty high fallutin’.

David says, “It is rich, full bodied, but not too oaky.  It still has a bit of lightness to it.”

This is a good bottle to keep in the wine rack for just an “after work glass of wine”. And hey, we allowed ourselves sto look at the price tag now - it's only FIVE BUCKS!  That's half of what David anticipated.  It's a good one folks, get a bottle.

Day 322 - Scallops Wrapped in Uncured Bacon with Brown Sugar Glaze

I am sorry I keep bragging about our  local Trader Joe’s (Clarendon, VA), but guys, they had an ANNIVERSARY PARTY recently for their 4th anniversary!  Isn’t that sweet??  They had a raffle for 3 TJ’s bags stuffed with goodies, some samples (HELL-O – a whole candy cane Joe Joe instead of a broken up one like you might normally get at a TJ’s sample station) and they even had MUSIC!  This employee was playing guitar and singing and was great!  TJ’s always has fun music playing over the speakers, but it was cool to have live music while grocery shopping.

Raffle and sample!

This was the "invite" to the party!

And live music!  :)  Thanks TJ's - happy anniversary. We are glad you came to our hood.
Anyway, while we were there for the party, we picked up a box of Scallops Wrapped in Uncured Bacon with Brown Sugar Glaze.  I had been wanting to try them (David not as much as me).  We busted them out around 6:00 pm because we hadn’t eaten lunch but were hitting the road to do a few things and needed something warm in our bellies before taking off.  Just needed something to hold us over until we got back and made “real dinner”.

These could be messy to cook. The instructions say to cook these on a baking tray.  I think that means a cookie sheet looking device that has small sides.  We do not own one of those (and our cupboard is full and messy enough) so my choices were a baking dish or a cookie sheet.  I chose the cookie sheet, but put foil on the oven under it expecting that some bacon fat miiiight roll off.

They come on little skewers, which were a problem for us recently with the Chicken Parmesan Lollipops (to be reviewed soon) but in this case the skewers worked great.  They held the food securely and made for an easy way to eat it.

Aren't they cute???
The box says a serving size is 3 pieces.  There are 10 pieces in the pack.  I am not a math major, but it is gonna be tough to divide these evenly if we follow the serving size recommendation, isn’t it?

Now onto the TASTE.  I like them, they are really good.  The first bite worried me that the scallops might taste a little too “fishy” but all subsequent bites were yummy.  They hold together well – the bacon is a lovely little wrapping.

While I was baking these I thought, “I bet these would work great as party appetizers”.  Then I wondered to myself, “WHY do I mention “party food” so often in this blog?  We almost never throw parties and are honestly not party guests very often, either.  I must imagine that the rest of the world, all of YOU, are out to or hosting parties 4 nights of the week!  I am living my life vicariously through the fabulous cocktail parties that I imagine you throw for all of your well-dressed friends.  At your next soiree, these bacon scallops would be good to serve.  When you set them out on your fancy crystal platter (that I am imagining) I would plan on each guest eating 4.

These are not as expensive as I would expect (scallops can be pricey sometimes).  I give these a rating of 4.

Now for David’s opinion.  His is less glowing than mine…

It looks like he likes 'em
David:  “Scallops are the tofu of the sea.  They are pretty much flavorless.  They have a delightful texture, but unless you have some kinda SAUCE goin’ on to give them flavor – herbs, spices, something – they are really just sort of Styrofoam wrapped in bacon.

However – the bacon is great!  The overall taste is not bad.  The skewer-age is perfectly designed and the bacon is delicious.  I poured some soy sauce over the scallop (in the inside) and it made it more palatable.  It gave it this thing that I tend to like, I don’t know about you, it is a thing called ‘TASTE’.  (Note:  as if there wasn’t enough sodium already, he goes and adds soy sauce…)  The bacon disguises the fact that the scallop isn’t really pulling its’ weight taste-wise.  I would give these a 3.75.”

There you have it!  I am gonna go with a 4 for the final review, because David also recommends them for a party.  We both think people would say, “Oh fannnncy” when they see these and think you went to a lot of work to skewer each little scallop and wrap it gingerly in bacon.  They will never know that you just opened the package and heated them.  Shhh – I’ll never tell…

Day 320 - Chicken Pot Pie (fresh)

Let's start with something FUN - Clarendon Trader Joe's (Virginia, right outside Washington DC) is where the awesome Rebekah works.  She is the only store rep who has written me back (out of the 21 stores we have visited and I have written to about this blog project).  Her store is now having THIS super fun contest:

Well, we do not have a dog or cat...  So we do not consume TJ's pet food products (this sign was hanging in the pet food aisle).  HOWEVER, we do have a couple of furry friends who like TJ's stuff, so went sent in these entries:

Ted loves TJ's honey
Ty is a fan of TJ's bananas

Aren't they adorable?  :)  Seriously though, I think it is great that some Trader Joe's store really get into the "fun spirit" and host stuff like this.  Ok, now onto today's review.

This was not a frozen chicken pot pie, but one of the “fancier” fresh ones that are in the refrigerated section (by the hummus and cheeses).  I think it is a seasonal item.

I wish I would have grabbed the TURKEY Pot Pie right next to this...  Maybe we just got a bad one??
David loved this.  He even uttered , “Deee-licious.”

I cooked this (and by “cooked” I mean “put it in the oven which was preheated to 375 and followed the instructions for how long to cook it”.  It isn’t rocket science).  And STILL…  sigh.  It was super watery and not even HOT all the way through even though I left it in the oven longer than the instructions said.  I think the instructions need to be modified.

David agreed that it was too watery and seemed to try to veil his suspicion that I somehow cooked it wrong (I HEATED IT UP, WHAT COULD GO WRONG??) by saying that, “Even despite the consistency it was great.  it may be possible to cook this in such a way that it was not quite this watery”.

He looks over the moon about it and he hasn't even TASTED it yet
I was disappointed in this puppy.  When I took it out of the oven it looked like it was cooked.  It wasn’t until I had cut it in half and put it on plates that I realized it was still very chilly inside.  I had to bung it in the microwave. I thought the chicken chunks in this were too big and some had hard BITS.  There wasn’t a lot of creaminess – it could use a creamier sauce.

Here it is before I cut it.  See, how was I to know it was still COLD on the inside?  Deceptive...

Here is the watery mess of the inside.  Note:  no steam coming off of this...
Also, does it look like the picture on the front of the box?  Not so much...
I think we had this last year in the autumn and we remembered it as being good.  But maybe we had the TURKEY pot pie and not the chicken one, perhaps this is different.  This brought nothing special to the table and needed salt and pepper just to add some jazz.

The container says this dish is 3 servings.  We would beg to differ and say it is 2, maybe 2.5 if you have half a person at your dinner table.  We cut it down the middle and each ate half.  Then again, we didn’t make a vegetable to go with it.

I say skip this chicken pot pie and buy a cheaper frozen one.  it might not be “fancy” but it will be less watery.  Or better still, buy TJ’s Chicken Pot Pie Ravioli!  Now THOSE are yummy and well priced!  Chicken Pot Pie Ravioli review here

David gives this a 4.25.  I give it a 3.25 (that is being a bit generous).

Price – $6.99
Rating – 3.75

Day 316 - Egg Pappardelle Pasta (plus bonus news about our HALLOWEEN COSTUMES!)

Before I review today’s product, let me share some super fun news:

WE WON 2 TRADER JOE’S HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTESTS!

When we first went to the Bethesda Trader Joe’s on October 25th we saw this sign, which of course got me excited!

We had already been working on our costumes – I was going to be a big piece of BACON and David was going to dress as a sunny side up EGG!  (Of course, ironically these are 2 things that we really like from TJ’s and got great reviews see bacon review here and see egg review here .)  We checked at the Clarendon TJ’s (very close to our house) and they were ALSO having a customer costume contest!!!

We got the costumes all finished up (easier said than done) and went into the Clarendon store to get our picture taken.  It was a blast!  Walking around the store dressed as bacon and egg was not EASY, mind you, but very fun.  Everyone kept saying, “Hey!  Bacon and eggs!!” as we passed.  We had to wait in line to pay for our purchases and that was funny – standing there in costume as the line snaked forward.

Here we are in the underground parking garage of the Clarendon Trader Joe's - you can see David was sort of TALL...
The next day we went to the Bethesda store and got our photo taken for the contest there, too!  That store was even HARDER to walk around because it is smaller and more crowded.  But it was really cool because some employees were also dressed up (like the lovely Alison who was dressed as Carmen Miranda!).

I wish I had a photo of the Carmen Miranda costume, but I don't, so here is another BACON & EGGS costume shot!  :)
Both stores called and said we were WINNERS!!!  We won gift cards, which of course we spent immediately on more TJ’s stuff.  J  Thanks Trader Joe’s!!!
THANKS BETHESDA TJ'S!
THANKS CLARENDON TJ'S!!

Now onto the review - Egg Pappardelle Pasta

The package said four servings, which I thought seemed wrong because there didn’t seem to be that much in the package.  Of course, after COOKING the pasta I realized they were right – those puppies really plump up!  Four servings was indeed accurate.

Here is what the package looks like - find it in the pasta section
We served this pasta with a dollop of butter ( butter review here from waaaay back on day 49) and smothered with beef stroganoff which David lovingly prepared while I was at work, and a side of TJ’s broccoli cooked perfectly by yours truly.

YUMMY!  The broccoli was a nice side for this hearty meal
This pasta was DELICIOUS.  It balanced the beef stroganoff splendidly.  The pappardelle is noodle-y.  It is egg-y.  It is everything you would want an egg noodle to be.  It tastes “fresh” and is something different rather than rice or a traditional pasta (we eat a loooot of pasta).

Mid-bite.
David agrees and said they were good noodles.  They were rich and soft and “the noodles did their job”.  The egg noodle is a little richer than just having pasta all the time.

Note – these noodles are low sodium so if you are looking for that in your diet these might be a good fit.
