Extraordinary Eggs Marbled Chocolates

It is a new season, spring, and you know what that means:  SEASONAL PRODUCTS AT TRADER JOE’S!  Granted, springtime does not bring with it the plethora of products that autumn does (can you say PUMPKIN anyone??), but none-the-less, it is exciting to see different, limited time offerings on the shelves.

oops - a bit blurry - sorry.
And of course I need to try and review at least one seasonal product!  Which is why I invested in these Extraordinary Eggs Marbled Chocolates!  I say “invested” because at $4.99, these are more expensive than your average Easter candy J (think hollow waxy chocolate bunny or hard as a rock jelly beans…).

They are EXTRAORDINARY - it says so right in the product name!
I had seen these at our local Northern Virginia Trader Joe’s, so when I was perusing the shelves this week at the Omaha, Nebraska TJ’s I had them on my (mental) grocery  list.  Oddly though, I couldn’t find them.  They weren’t on the “new products” end cap, nor were they in the fancy ass chocolate section.  So I asked and was led to them – hidden in an unfortunate area by the cookies over the frozen foods.  I would say put those suckers out where people can see them and get excited about them, but maybe the Omaha store was trying to do the whole “hide the Easter egg” thing…

Anyway, I was in charge of making a nice dinner for some of my family members and a friend, so these fancy eggs were part of that event.  I gave every person one beautiful chocolate egg in a dainty little bright colored bowl at their place setting.  They were lovely!  In fact, they were SO LOVELY that at least two people at the dinner thought they were WOODEN EASTER DECORATIONS!!  J  No lie!

A small photo of a small egg in a small bowl
Here is how these pretty little eggs went down:

Me:  First off, they are gorgeous.  The “painting” on the outside coating is like artwork.  I like that they were SHINY, too.  The green ones looked BLUE to me - like robin eggs with little spots.  There are 16 eggs in a package, and the packaging itself is also very pretty – it almost looks like the treats are riding in a delicate little gold egg carton.  There are 4 different flavors of eggs – almond praline, caramel, raspberry, and crispy cookies.  By the time I finished dinner (which was all Trader Joe’s food, of course…) I really was not hungry for dessert, but the eggs are tiny and so I could “squeeze one in”.  It was quite yummy!  I thought they were rich and delicious.  They are from France and really taste like quality chocolate (not, as mentioned above, like the crappy Easter candy of my youth).  (Note:  not that my youth was bad!!  But these eggs are to the jelly beans of my youth as a 1972 Ford Pinto is to a 2016 Prius J ).  The package says a serving size is 3 eggs, which seems like tooooo many to me.  One was plenty, and I can see someone eating two.  But three would be overkill.  I think these would make a wonderful gift.   I would give these a 4.75, the high score representing their beauty as much as the taste.

These are real robin eggs in a nest at my house, but don't they look like the Extraordinary Eggs at Trader Joe's?
Jordan (my nephew): “ I enjoyed the fact that these Easter eggs looked like REAL EGGS, not candy.  I tried hard to separate mine into 4 bites so I could show everyone what was inside. When I bit it, it did not crumble apart.  These are very well made.  I savored each bite.  I don’t think that I could eat more than one, it was so rich, but delicious.  I would give these a 4.”

Jordan, carefully biting his egg into pieces to show us the inside of it

Sherry (my sister):  “These are very good.  They are PRETTY.  They are not your typical Easter candy looking egg.  I would give them a 4.5.”

Sherry, enjoying her Extraordinary Egg

Zach (Jordan’s partner):  “I thought the eggs were very good.  They were very rich and chocolately.  I like the way they look, too, they are very pretty.  I would give these a solid 3.”

Abhishek (new friend from India):  “I found these were DECEIVING!  I thought it was a showpiece, but it turned out to be CHOCOLATE!!!  I would give them a 3.25.”

Jim:  “I thought the same thing Abhishek did!  I thought they were wooden and I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t taste like WOOD!  I would give them a 4.”

Sherry and Jim:  "These are muuuuch better than a Cadbury egg.  And much better than a Brach’s egg!"

Everyone at the dinner party:  THESE ARE MUCH BETTER THAN A WOODEN EGG!

This is a classic photo of my sisters and I one Easter.  Sherry is rocking a hat. Annette is standing in a fashion model pose. And me?  Well, I look like I must have had to pee.
I am pleased to say that I have a few of these eggs to bring home to David when I return!  He will be very happy with them I am sure.  I recommend you buy a package before TJ's runs out of them.  They are a sweet way to celebrate the arrival of springtime.

Price: $4.99 (which is more than a hollow chocolate Easter bunny from the drug store, but when you do the math each little beautiful egg is only .31 cents!)
Rating (average of 6 raters): 4

Note:  Trader Joe’s has similar looking chocolates in the shape of marbles.  I suspect they are the same, but have not tried those.  But if you buy these egg shaped ones and get addicted, I think you can get your fill with the marble shaped ones when the eggs are out of season J .

Day 333 - Montezuma's Chocolate Truffle Collection

Every holiday season, especially around Hanukkah and Christmas, Trader Joe’s has new, unique products.  They seem to have an inordinate amount of them this year.  One such product is MONTEZUMA’S CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE COLLECTION.

I cannot be the only one who thinks this product name is a fail…  The one and only thing I think of when I hear “Montezuma’s” is…  Do I have to say it?  I mean, you are thinking it, too, right???  Ok, ok, ok – I think of MONTEZUMA’S REVENGE!!!

And it was because of that negative association with the name that I didn’t even want to taste any of these.  I was afraid one bite twould send me running to the bathroom.  So I let David eat them.  J

LOVELY truffles
This collection is billed as “innovative british chocolate” (all lowercase theirs, apparently spelling british without capitalizing it is innovative!).  The collection contains truffles that go by these lovely names:
·         Columbian Cappucino
·         American Idol
·         Sweet Summertime
·         Tiger Tiger
·         Eclipse
·         Secret Squirrel
·         Milking Maid

The box is gorgeous.  It has a lovely design, great colors, and is tied with a fat, black grosgrain ribbon.  Very classy!  All of the truffles are also beautiful and very well displayed.  And I love that they come with a little guide that has the names, descriptions, and photos of each truffle on it.

Here is what David, who normally adores chocolates, thought:  “I ate one that had white bits around the top and wasn’t too happy with it – it was too hard.  (I think he must have meant Columbian Cappuccino.)  They all seem too hard to me, they should be a bit more yielding.  This one (Tiger Tiger) has quite a nice truffle on the inside – a deep, dark, rich truffle.  This one is not so bad.  But they all could do with being a bit more yielding.  And a bit buttery-er would be nice.”

(I asked him if he would give this item as a GIFT, as that is what it looks like it was intended for to me):  “It depends on who the gift recipient WAS and how I felt about them…  If they were the kind of person that loves pretty packages then I might give it to them and presume to think that because it looked so nice that they were enjoying the chocolates.  If it were someone who really appreciated chocolates I probably would not.”

Pretty cool logo, but the name....
I decided that I owed it to you, the readers, to taste one of these, even though I feared it might result in Montezuma’s Revenge…  So I ate a Columbian Cappuccino.  Surprisingly, I like these more than Mr. David Chocolate Lover!  The outside was hard, so when I bit it I lost a few bits.  Be warned – do not bite these over a white rug (especially if it is not your white rug!) cuz chocolate bits are going to falls.  But the truffle was nice.  And fancy.  Not to mention, pretty.

I give bonus points to any truffles/chocolates that come with a KEY.
Seriously, it makes the whole experience so much more fun.
I checked out website of the chocolatier in the UK – company website here  I see you can buy the same box of truffles directly from them for 11.99 British, which when I convert it at today’s rates equals $18.22 US!!!  Yowsa, even after shipping these little chocolate balls to the USA, adding what must be a mark-up, and putting them on the shelves, Trader Joe’s STILL MANAGES to give us an amazing bargain at 8.99!!!!  Go Joe!!!

I did a bit of research to see how this all came down, and I see that this is Montezuma’s first foray into America.  They inked the deal in August 2015 with TJ’s and shipped 20,000 boxes of those truffles.  So if you want one, you best grab it soon.  article about Montezuma working with TJ's here

These truffles would make a fine gift.  But I really do think that they really should go back to the drawing board on the name.

P.S. - TODAY IS MY DAD'S 80TH BIRTHDAY!!!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD.  I LOVE YOU!

Day 329 - Valrhona Advent Calendar

This I believe*:  no matter how much you cut corners, save pennies, and sacrifice, there are some moments when you need to TREAT YOURSELF.  Those special treats are what make all of the thriftiness pay off.  I think this is one of my core values – be careful with your money and time, but once in a while, SPLURGE!!

This advent calendar is one such splurge.

Here it is folks - the Valrhona Advent Calendar 2015
Look, we do not NEED an advent calendar.  We are adults and can pretty much count days on our own without needing to open a little window.

Plus, at our house we do not even RESPECT the days as they are presented to us on any given calendar!  No lie – we have a very large pile of UNOPENED gifts that we got for each other from Christmases and birthdays past.  There they are – all wrapped up neatly with bows, and piled high, shiny, smiling at us, waiting patiently to be opened.  Some are years old!  They are like a great archeological site.  Who knows what is in them??  Certainly not us!  When we decide it is an “open a present day” (the mood strikes every once in a while!) the GIVER of the gift is normally equally as surprised as the RECEIVER, because the present has been wrapped so long no one knows what in the world is in there!  It is exciting!!

All of that is to say, even when we get to the END of this advent calendar, it will not be like the starting gun of some race that announces, “This is it!!!  It is time to begin!  OPEN…  THE…. PRESENTS!!!”.   The end of the advent calendar (for us) will be “OH look, a bigger bar of chocolate on this day!”.

So although we did not NEED an advent calendar, we bought this one.  There was one for a fraction of the cost sitting right next to it on the Trader Joe’s shelf, but we chose this FANCY ONE.  Because we decided the splurge was worth it at that moment.

In our morning attire (and hair dos) TREATING OURSELVES by opening not one but TWO windows on our new calendar
And it was!

“Wait…” you may be thinking.  “How do they know it was WORTH IT already?  It is not time to open the first window yet!!”.

Did you learn NOTHING by reading the paragraph above that explains that we do not really respect “correct” holiday dates at our house???  J

Plus, we HAD to try the chocolates in this calendar early if I was going to review it in time for you to rush to your local Trader Joe’s and pick one up, right???

If you think the outside is pretty, wait until you open a door and see the wrapping on a chocolate!!
The concept of this product is the same as other advent calendars – you peel open a little cardboard window everyday and reveal a treat inside.  Only, with THIS one, unlike other advent calendars, you are not greeted by a waxy piece of chocolate made in the shape of a reindeer.  No siree.

Nope.  What you find behind the little doors are lovely petite artisanal chocolate bars.  Really yummy ones.  Wrapped in pretty papers.  They are sort of like the SPA of advent calendar chocolates.  They are like taking a mini vacation to France (in your mouth!).

Look, we have only eaten two of these little chocolates, so we have only tasted two of the flavors.  They were amazingly delicious.  They were very high quality chocolate and not the crazy, wacked out flavor blends that some chocolate companies now think everyone loves.   They are rich, complex, DELICIOUS little chocolate squares.  (Spoiler alert – on the last day of this calendar you get a FULL SIZED VALHRONA CHOCOLATE BAR!!)

This product was pricey.  But we are worth it.

And so are YOU!!!!  In this season of rushing about, cooking, writing cards, baking, and buying/wrapping gifts for other people – make sure you take at least a moment to TREAT YOURSELF.  For us, these chocolates are a good way to do that.  Maybe for you it is taking time to read People magazine cover to cover.  Or getting your nails done.  Or going to a hockey game.

Whatever it is, just remember to TREAT YOURSELF.  That, to me, doesn’t by any means you have to spend  a ton of money.  “Treating myself” sometimes means getting a funky bottle of nail polish.  Or buying a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice and sitting down to savor it.  Treating yourself can be ANYTHING.  DO IT!  And when you do, if anyone says you are being selfish or extravagant, just tell ‘em I told you to do it.

Find it at your TJ's with the other holiday products.  GO TODAY - they are selling out.
If you want to get this particular advent calendar, make sure you hustle to your TJ’s today.  They miiiight already be out, but for your sake I hope not.  And if they are out of this particular advent calendar, TREAT YOURSELF to another one of the fancy holiday items there.  Go for it!  Seriously, do it.  J

Day 322 - Scallops Wrapped in Uncured Bacon with Brown Sugar Glaze

I am sorry I keep bragging about our  local Trader Joe’s (Clarendon, VA), but guys, they had an ANNIVERSARY PARTY recently for their 4th anniversary!  Isn’t that sweet??  They had a raffle for 3 TJ’s bags stuffed with goodies, some samples (HELL-O – a whole candy cane Joe Joe instead of a broken up one like you might normally get at a TJ’s sample station) and they even had MUSIC!  This employee was playing guitar and singing and was great!  TJ’s always has fun music playing over the speakers, but it was cool to have live music while grocery shopping.

Raffle and sample!

This was the "invite" to the party!

And live music!  :)  Thanks TJ's - happy anniversary. We are glad you came to our hood.
Anyway, while we were there for the party, we picked up a box of Scallops Wrapped in Uncured Bacon with Brown Sugar Glaze.  I had been wanting to try them (David not as much as me).  We busted them out around 6:00 pm because we hadn’t eaten lunch but were hitting the road to do a few things and needed something warm in our bellies before taking off.  Just needed something to hold us over until we got back and made “real dinner”.

These could be messy to cook. The instructions say to cook these on a baking tray.  I think that means a cookie sheet looking device that has small sides.  We do not own one of those (and our cupboard is full and messy enough) so my choices were a baking dish or a cookie sheet.  I chose the cookie sheet, but put foil on the oven under it expecting that some bacon fat miiiight roll off.

They come on little skewers, which were a problem for us recently with the Chicken Parmesan Lollipops (to be reviewed soon) but in this case the skewers worked great.  They held the food securely and made for an easy way to eat it.

Aren't they cute???
The box says a serving size is 3 pieces.  There are 10 pieces in the pack.  I am not a math major, but it is gonna be tough to divide these evenly if we follow the serving size recommendation, isn’t it?

Now onto the TASTE.  I like them, they are really good.  The first bite worried me that the scallops might taste a little too “fishy” but all subsequent bites were yummy.  They hold together well – the bacon is a lovely little wrapping.

While I was baking these I thought, “I bet these would work great as party appetizers”.  Then I wondered to myself, “WHY do I mention “party food” so often in this blog?  We almost never throw parties and are honestly not party guests very often, either.  I must imagine that the rest of the world, all of YOU, are out to or hosting parties 4 nights of the week!  I am living my life vicariously through the fabulous cocktail parties that I imagine you throw for all of your well-dressed friends.  At your next soiree, these bacon scallops would be good to serve.  When you set them out on your fancy crystal platter (that I am imagining) I would plan on each guest eating 4.

These are not as expensive as I would expect (scallops can be pricey sometimes).  I give these a rating of 4.

Now for David’s opinion.  His is less glowing than mine…

It looks like he likes 'em
David:  “Scallops are the tofu of the sea.  They are pretty much flavorless.  They have a delightful texture, but unless you have some kinda SAUCE goin’ on to give them flavor – herbs, spices, something – they are really just sort of Styrofoam wrapped in bacon.

However – the bacon is great!  The overall taste is not bad.  The skewer-age is perfectly designed and the bacon is delicious.  I poured some soy sauce over the scallop (in the inside) and it made it more palatable.  It gave it this thing that I tend to like, I don’t know about you, it is a thing called ‘TASTE’.  (Note:  as if there wasn’t enough sodium already, he goes and adds soy sauce…)  The bacon disguises the fact that the scallop isn’t really pulling its’ weight taste-wise.  I would give these a 3.75.”

There you have it!  I am gonna go with a 4 for the final review, because David also recommends them for a party.  We both think people would say, “Oh fannnncy” when they see these and think you went to a lot of work to skewer each little scallop and wrap it gingerly in bacon.  They will never know that you just opened the package and heated them.  Shhh – I’ll never tell…

Day 276 - Balsamic Vinegar of Modena

We call this “fancy ass balsamic vinegar”.  Basically cuz the jar looks fancy.

Arty farty shot of fancy ass vinegar.
David says, “It is soooo nice….  “  But when prompted for more details, such as WHAT MAKES IT NICE, he says, “It is balsaaamic.  And it is VINEGAR.”

Yeah – it is that sort of discerning palate and descriptive wording that makes a solid review…

In discussing what exactly MAKES vinegar balsamic vinegar, David supposed that it is fermented and that makes it taste richer and a little bit sweet.  Not one to take his word for it, I Googled it.

And after reading that article I think HOLY SMOKES – I now understand why balsamic vinegar is so expensive!  It takes 12 years to make it, people!  And the barrels it is aged in disintegrate and have to be repeatedly reinforced!!  That’s it – I need to go to Italy and see balsamic vinegar being made.

(Note – after reading this article I checked to see where this TJ’s Balsamic comes from, as the article said TRUE balsamic only comes from two places.  Guess what?  This ain’t some cheap NYC street corner knock-off, it comes from Modena, one of the REAL spots.  Bam.)

Says right on the label and the signage - OF MODENA folks.  Fancy.
As for this particular balsamic, I really like the bottle, it is a cool shape.  The lid tricks me every time – I think it is going to be a CORK when I pull it off, but it is a plastic insert.  It makes a good seal when you put it on.  The bottle is also the right size.  Have you ever had a bottle of balsamic that is too big and it is in your fridge forever??  Or too small and it tips over?  This one is a good size and well shaped.  Or, as David says, “It has a nice flat bottom.”  (You can sense it coming, can’t you??)  “I like my balsamic like I like my women, with a nice, flat bottom.” (Groan.)

This balsamic was a tiny bit more expensive than SOME balsamic you see, but not the cheapest.  It was, in the grand scheme of things, middle of the road priced balsamic (but a cheap road, like St. Charles Place, not like Park Place).  I mean, you can pay a LOT of money for some faaaancy balsamic (if you are into that).  But are the super duper expensive ones any better???  I am sure if you are a chi-chi fancy rich person you might be able to taste the difference.  For us, this one will do just fine thank you very much.

This is the St. Charles Place of balsamic
We mostly use balsamic vinegar for salads.  I guess we should get more creative and cook with it, too.  We use very little of it.  If you want to read Trader Joe’s official description of this product, check out their archived article here .

Day 257 - Truffle Marcona Almonds

I covered up the label of these almonds before serving some to David and his little brother Ted (I say “little” but by that I mean he is YOUNGER THAN DAVID, not that he is actually little) so that the taste would be a surprise.  Here is what they thought:

Ted:  (After eating a nut or two) “I disqualify myself from participating in this review…  I like a high quality nut, but dislike the combination of a FLAVOR and an ALMOND.  I am an ALMOND PURIST.  This particular almond tastes of garlic and smoke…  Maybe people would eat it with a sweet tasting beer…  These are not to be eaten by the handful like peanuts.  I can imagine a high end restaurant serving them on a cheese plate with some other fancy nuts.”

Truffle Marcona Almonda - fancy
David:  “GARLIC.”  (Interesting, eh?  In the blind taste test Ted thought the truffle flavor was garlic, too.) “These are nice.  I would be happy eating these (editor’s note – there is little that David would NOT be happy eating – he loves to eat…).  (Then I told them that the taste was actually TRUFFLE and showed them the bag).  Now that I know they are TRUFFLE they taste FANCY!!  They do what they set out to do.  You know what they are perfect for??  If you are giving a party, you put out little bowls of these in a few places.  People nibble on them and think, "These are interesting.  What are these??”.
David and his "little brother" in Cincinnati - his "little" brother is taller than he is
And here is my opinion (obviously mine was not a blind taste test):  These are very Truffle-y (that is not a proper word but it fits in this situation).  I wouldn’t want to eat a whole bag of them.  I think they would pair well with a red wine.  They are weird.  I would consider them a “novelty nut”.  They are for chi-chi parties – a chi-chi nut.  They MIGHT work chopped up really fine and sprinkled on a salad.

Marcona almonds are expensive.  Truffles are expensive.  Put them together and what do you get?  EXPENSIVE
(But they would be more in other stores than they are at TJs, so if you want them, go to TJs for them)
They are pricey - $6.49 for 6 oz.  These are not BAD, but I would rather spend that $6.49 on something else.

Day 247 - Vodka of the Gods

Vodka of the Gods - the GODS mind you!!
We are by no means vodka experts.  David’s father used to drink a vodka tonic, one every night.  When he was going downhill in his later years we moved in with him to take care of him, and every single night we would make his vodka tonic.  I had never really had that drink before that time, but boy did I come to like them.  We would sit in the study, which was also where the television was, and watch something (sometimes “Fear Factor”) while we ate dinner off little trays and drank our vodka tonics.  Nice memories…

Mr. Gaines - the world's best father-in-law
So when we were at Trader Joe’s in La Jolla, California earlier this spring, I was very surprised to see VODKA!!!  Our local Trader Joe’s only carry beer and wine.  California was the first TJ’s I had been to that stocked hard liquor.  So even though we knew it was ridiculous because we would have to FLY with a big ass bottle of vodka, David caved into my giggling and we put it in the cart.

LOOK!  Liquor at a Trader Joe's!!  People in California have no idea how lucky they are...
It made it home safely in our luggage (it’s a plastic bottle) and got put away in the cupboard, with the other bottles of vodka that do not get drunk.

And that is where it sat for MONTHS until recently, when I said, “Hey, let’s have a VODKA TONIC!” and pulled that puppy out.

Supplies - a vodka tonic in the making...
Like I said, we are not experts.  This vodka tasted fine to us.  It brought back good memories of Mr. Gaines (David’s dad).  But the big 1.75 liter bottle is only $10.99…  I guess what I am saying is, if you are some fancy schmancy vodka drinker who wants only the super duper exclusive stuff and looks down their nose at regular vodka, this might not be your drink.

Yes, we know that is not the "correct" glassware to drink a vodka tonic out of.  I TOLD you are not experts, didn't I?
(But really, more than that, we are rule breakers...)
But if you are like us and just want a vodka tonic that tastes good, buy a bottle!  (That is, if your store carries hard liquor.  It all depends on local regulations.)

Only $10.99

Day 58 - Capers

At our house, we have a thing about CAPERS.  Anytime we want to make something “fancy” (or pretend to make something “fancy”) we say “ADD CAPERS!”.  Because, in our mind, capers bring on the fancy!!  Maybe it is because they were something I never had growing up?  Whatever the reason, I LIKE CAPERS now!

The thing about them is, until we found them at Trader Joe’s, they were crazy expensive!  Other grocery stores sell them in teeny tiny jars (near the olives) that cost an arm and a leg.  The jars are so tiny I always had to use a little miniature espresso spoon to get them out.  And because they came in such small jars, and cost so much, I was always very careful to only use a few  in whatever I was making.

See - an avocado gets FANCY when you add capers!

Not anymore, my friends!  Trader Joe’s capers are delicious and ridiculously cheap (or perhaps they are “priced just right” and everyone else is ripping shoppers off??).  Not only that, Trader Joe’s sells capers in regular size/shaped jars, so you can use a real spoon to scoop them out!  And they taste just as good as any capers at other stores, seriously!!!!  You get more than DOUBLE the capers as you would at Giant Supermarket for only one thin dime more.

Trader Joe's capers - nice size jar and perfect price

Giant store brand capers - R-I-P  O-F-F (and lousy size jar)

And do you know what??  Because they are not expensive, you don’t have to feel guilty about throwing tons of them into whatever you make!  FANCY IT UP, FRIENDS, FANCY IT UP!

We use capers on salmon, with asparagus, in omelets – capers, capers, capers!  Always have a jar in the fridge because you never know when you are going to need to BRING ON THE FANCY.

Price – $2.69
