Secco Grapefruit Pompelini

MY SISTERS CAME TO FLORIDA TO VISIT US!!!

We have a little beach house in Ormond Beach (it is a vacation rental home when we are not crashing in it).  It is rare that friends and family come when we are here, so this was a treat.  And what made it even MORE fun is that my 2 sisters and I all have summer birthdays, so we decided to whoop it up while they were in town and celebrate one birthday a day by doing whatevvvver the birthday girl of the moment wanted to do.  It was super fun!

But because the closest Trader Joe's is 90 minutes away, we needed to stock up on a few essentials before leaving DC.  And by essentials, I basically mean WINE...

David displaying our boatload (ok, cartload) of TJ's wine -
ready to hang out in Florida for a while!!
Oh sure, there are grocery stores and liquor stores in Florida where we could pick up wine, but it just wouldn't be the same as ol' TJ's wine, now would it??  So we loaded up a cart of wine (plus other "staples" we needed for the visit).  Then we happened on Irene (at the Bailey's Crossroads, VA Trader Joe's).  Irene quickly became my new BFF.  This is because, a mere 10 days before my 51 birthday, she CARDED ME TO SAMPLE WINES!

Me and my new buddy, Irene!
Basically, after that compliment, I probably would have bought anything Irene was peddling.  But it turned out that what she was peddling, Secco Grapefruit Pompelini, was actually tasty!!  So into our cart went a bottle.  Then another one, for good measure...

Even the bottle is pretty, don't you think?
One of the items on my sister Sherry's birthday wish list was "sunrise on the beach with mimosas".  We figured this Secco Grapefruit Pomelini was just as fancy as any mimosa, so we chilled it and packed it in a beachbag, along with 4 of the finest plastic champagne flutes money could buy!  Then off we went to watch the sun rise!!

Sunrise at Ormond Beach, Florida - Mother Nature at her finest, no filter needed
We busted out the Secco Grapefruit, toasted to birthdays, and had a lovely day.

A TOAST!!
Here are the reviews of the drink (reviewed while we swished our feet around in a blow up swimming pool :) ):

Sherry:  "It is kind of tart, bubbly, and refreshing.  It is perfect for a hot summer day.  It would be great at a brunch.  I give it 5 stars."

Susan:  "I also think it is great for a hot summer day.  It should be served well chilled, and if you want to be fancy like us, you need to serve it in champagne flutes (though the plastic of the flutes does make it tend more toward redneck than fancy...).  It would be good with fruit - maybe strawberries.  It would also be good with salad.  I think this is an all-around nice drink and worked well as a substitute for mimosas.  The frosted glass bottle is very pretty.  I also give it a 5."

David:  "This is a perfect balance of grapefruit, refreshing-ness, with the slightest hint of wine/alcohol, but nothing overpowering in the least.  It is not too sweet.  I give this a 5."

(David's comment of this only having the slightest hint of alcohol made me curious so I checked - it is 8%.  Fair warning - it does seem like the type of thing you might just sip and slurp and knock back until you were a bit tipsy...)

Annette:  "I rate it a solid 5!!!  It was so delicious!  I don't really care for wine that much, but that was delicious!!"

Sunrise toast from my sisters and me - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
My sisters helped review several other products while we were all together - more of those reviews to come!

Teeny Tiny Avocados (and Zechery)

Guys, you need to go to Trader Joe’s soon.  They have the most adorable thing right now – little tiny baby avocados!!!

SHOPPING COMMUNICATION FAIL!  Me: "David, please hold a bag of those cutie patootie teeny tiny
avocados for a photo!"  David (grabbing bag of regular, NOT teeny tiny avocados):
"OK!".  Yeah - wrong avocados in photo.  The ones in this review are teenier and tinier.
I know, I know, tiny versions of stuff is usually a rip off.  You usually have to pay MORE to get LESS.  But in the case of Trader Joe’s Teeny Tiny Avocados, you don’t get ripped off!!  Au contraire, mon frere!  If you have bought avocados lately you know the price is super high right now.  But at TJ’s you can get a bag of petite cutie patootie avocados for $2.99 (each bag has 6 tiny avocados, as opposed the the regular sized ones like David is accidentally holding in this photo which come 4 to a bag).  So teeny tiny avocados come out to 50 cents each!

A medium size price for some teeny tiny avocados
And with these teeny tiny avocados you don’t give up TASTE for cuteness, either!!!  These little suckers taste amazing!  And, like the sign says, they are perfect for a single serving!  Why, just last night I cut one open and drizzled TJ’s balsamic vinegar (and non-Trader Joe’s olive oil…) in it.  I topped that with salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper, then got myself a bit of TJ’s feta (which we are addicted to and is reviewed here) and a few TJ’s raw English peas (reviewed here).  It was a delicious and healthy side dish!

Here is a little glimpse of a little avocado.  My hand is included for size reference, though
the angle of the photo is a bit tricky I guess.  Sorry.  But you get the idea!
So the long and the short of it is: YOU SHOULD GO GET A BAG OF THESE ADORABLE AVOCADOS.  I wouldn’t say they are Barbie sized, cuz a Barbie avocado would be the say of, what, like a jelly bean??  These could be Cabbage Patch sized avocados

And before I go, let me introduce you to one of our favorite Trader Joe’s employees.  His name is Zechery and he works at our local TJ’s at Bailey’s Crossroads in Virginia.

BEST Trader Joe's ambassador - Zechery!
Zechery is the friendliest, sweetest, nicest TJ’s employee!!!  He smiles at us every single time we see him, and he always gives us a big hello and stops to talk.  I egotistically thought he just liked us, and that’s why he was so nice!  Then the other day I realized, it has nothing to do with US and everything to do with ZECHERY!  He is that way with all of the shoppers!  He makes everyone feel happy to be strolling the aisles and putting stuff in their carts.  Trader Joe’s is lucky to have him.

So, go get yourself some teeny tiny avocados while they still have them.  And if you live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area, go to Bailey’s Crossroads, pop into Trader Joe’s, and introduce yourself to Zechery.  Trust me, you will leave a happier person than you were when you went in.

Price (of the avocados, not of Zechery): $2.99

Rating (of both Zechery and the Teeny Tiny Avocados):  5

Kung Fu Girl Riesling

I have been tempted by this wine, Kung Fu Girl Riesling, before, solely because of the totally kick-ass name and label.  I mean, what woman WOULDN’T want to drink some KUNG FU GIRL RIESLING, right??  But at $9.99, it was a bit more expensive than some other tried and tested wines at TJ's, and I had just never thrown a bottle in my cart.

Until they taste tested it one night while I was shopping…

See, this guy was handing out samples!  Thanks Trader Joe's!
Yes, once again, the Trader Joe’s wine taste testing resulted in a sale (DO YOU HEAR ME BAILEY’S CROSSROADS, VIRGINIA TJ’S??  IT WORKS WHEN YOU STAND THERE AND POUR COMMUNION CUPS OF WINE TO HAND OUT.  DO IT MORE OFTEN LIKE YOU USED TO! )  (Actually, they have leased what used to be the music store space right next door and are renovating it to be a wine/beer area, so maaaaaybe they will be awesome like the NYC Trader Joe’s Wine Shop and have tastings every day!!  Oh please, oh please, oh please…)

But I digress…  I mean, I personally do not do kung fu, but this wine has such a kick ass, strong woman name that it was hard to resist!!

Here it is, sideways in my cart.  I swear I had only drunk a little tiny cup to taste it,
so I am not sure why I took a sideways photo.
Normally Riesling is not my “go to” wine, but this 2015 from Washington State was GOOD!  It was very nice.  It was smooth and not too sweet.  I drank it with a rice, leek, chicken, green pepper, and snow pea stir fry and it was a very tasty compliment to the dinner.
This sign says "new" but I think that might be a fib.  Sometimes TJ's says writes new
but they should write "new", cuz actually they have carried the product a while...
I recently heard a great story on the NPR show Freakonomics about drinking cheap wine.  They did blind taste tests with “wine snobs” – like, people who really KNEW about wine.  Well lo and behold, they often could not tell the difference between cheap wine and fancy pants wine.  (link to awesome Freakonomics story here - you should listen to it)  Maybe YOU think you can tell the difference, and maybe you CAN, but I think that most people cannot.  So, if you want a GIRL POWER wine for your girl get together (your girlfriend dinner or your book club perhaps!) – HAVE A BOTTLE OF KUNG FU RIESLING out.  It is a “Nevertheless, She Persisted” wine.

This wine tastes good.  It is not crappy.  So how is that for an endorsement?

Me, doing my best kung fu in our kitchen
I am reviewing this product by myself.  Oh sure, David had some, but I don’t really even care what he thought about it!  Because, you see, this wine is about STRONG WOMEN.  So, all of you strong women out there – BUY IT, DRINK IT, SUPPORT IT!  (And yes, I realize that it may well be made by a bunch of dudes in Washington, but don’t burst my bubble right now, ok?)  Get it!

Kung Fu Girl Riesling would have been the wine they served at the Women’s March in Washington DC (had they served wine).  The bottles could have worn little tiny pink pussy hats, and all of the marchers would have loved it.  Missed opportunity 😊 .

My hat, our posters, and the capitol in the background!!
Thanks for knitting the hat, Karen Hoyer!
Here is a bonus clip - short video of the crowd at the Women's March in Washington DC on January 21, 2017.  And yes, I realize the pink hats are controversial.  But you can still enjoy the video anyway - there are some great posters!

Tulip Time

In 2016 I reviewed Trader Joe’s tulips bulbs in a glass vase.  I loved them.  You can see that review here:  2016 review of Tulip Bulbs in Glass Vase

Looks like last year I scored PINK tulips!
Less than 2 weeks after I reviewed them, they BLOOMED, and I posted a reminder that life is, indeed, short, and you should just buy the damn tulip bulbs while Trader Joe’s has them briefly in stock.  You can see THAT review here:  2016 tulip reminder

And boy were they gorgeous when they bloomed!!

So, now it is 2017.

Have you figured out the pattern yet???

YES!  Trader Joe’s has once again started carrying their seasonal TULIP BULBS in a GLASS VASE!!  This is the time, friends!  This is when you need to treat yourself.  Maybe it is cold where you are (as it is right now in Washington DC where we are).  Maybe it is sunny and warm (like, if you live in Austin, Texas or something).  But whatever the weather, wherever your location, YOU DESERVE THESE TULIPS.

I GOT YELLOW ONES THIS YEAR!!!  Picked them up at the Bailey's Crossroads, VA Trader Joe's.
Trader Joe's has not raised the price on these one penny, and they are worth the (almost) $9.00 they cost.
A sign that SPRING is on the way - the birds are checking out the backyard looking for ideal nesting spots!
Mrs. Dove is BACK!
Treat yourself.  Treat your friend.  Treat your neighbor or your lover.  GO GET SOME TULIP BULBS IN A GLASS VASE and marvel, like I am, as they come to life on your coffee table!

Price:  still $8.99
Rating:  still 4.75

Another sign that SPRING is coming - it was 70 degrees one day this week!  Look, David wore SHORT SLEEVES!
(The temperature later plummeted that same night...)

Pour-Over Coffee Brewer Brew In the Bag

Guys, we didn’t go to Trader Joe’s for like, 5 days, cuz the county was telling people repeatedly to STAY OFF THE ROADS with the blizzard, right?  Of course, we had stocked up on pleeeeenty of food before the bad weather hit, so it was no hardship for us to not shop.

The blizzard had been over for days before we ventured out to Trader Joe's, but look how bare the produce section still was!  Every grocery store got slammed during the snow and I reckon no trucks could get in to bring more goods.
But then, the roads get clearer, and we made the trek to TJ’s.  But when we GOT THERE, no lie, THEY HAD CHANGED IT AROUND!!  Talk about a bit of a Twilight Zone moment!  J

That store at Bailey’s Crossroads (Virginia) seems to have had the same set up for a couple of years.  They change little minor things around every once in a while, but no real shake ups.  But in the few days we didn’t come visit, they did a big shift!  The first thing I noticed was the greeting cards (card review here) .  They used to be inconveniently located on a wooden column, but now they moved them to their own little rack.  I fear it might get in the way of carts and shoppers, but all in all a good move to sell more cards.

But the biggest move is the infamous DRIED FRUIT AND NUT AISLE – they moved the whole AISLE!!  They swapped the cereal/breakfast bar aisle for the nut aisle, meaning nuts are now open on one side (they are on the last aisle now, near produce) instead of being in an aisle with two sides.  Does that make sense?  I think this will be a good move – it leaves that very popular nut section more room for people to peruse.  However, it does make it now back up to produce, which is also usually crowded…  I am sure a lot of thought went into the big move before they did it.  I hope it works well!

TADA!!  Big switcheroo in the store set-up!  Dried fruit/nuts now backs up to produce.
Has YOUR Trader Joe’s done a re-haul lately???  I wonder if this is a trend, or just something this Northern Virginia store did (maybe cuz they had so few shoppers in space with the bad weather they could more easily move stuff around?).

Anyway, there were also a few new products on the shelves!!  One that caught my eye was this Pour Over Coffee Brewer Brew in the Bag Coffee.  It was on an end cap showcasing new products, but it also had a “Best of 2015” marking by it…  That confused me, because I THINK this something new.

On the "New Product" end cap, but marked with a 2015 Favorites sign, too...
Well, we grabbed one of the cute little coffee packages to bring home with us.  It is ground Arabica beans and says it is like a pour over coffee, which are all the rage these days.

We were a bit hesitant about this product...
When we both had a day off yesterday we set out to brew our new coffee.  The bag has a little black plastic pour spout.  The first step in brewing this is to break off the tip of that spout.  Then you pour in hot water, replace the little black tip, and let it steep for four minutes.

David carefully brewing our morning coffee
Here is how we felt about this product:

Susan:  I was wary about this.  I was worried the coffee would be really weak…  When making it, it didn’t feel like we poured all that much water in.  There are markings on the back of the package that show you where to fill up to if you want stronger or milder coffee, so we tried to follow that, but the envelope doesn’t get “fat” with water to there, it just looks like the coffee grounds are rising to there, so it is sort of hard to guesstimate how much water you have poured in.

Honestly, I thought this would be a colossal fail…  Here is what the packaging says, “Contains enough coffee and its own filter to make about two cups of coffee, depending on the preferred strength.  The coffee is filtered, but with the rich taste of a French Press.”

Well designed label - eye catching
I need to confess that right off the bat, before we even tasted the coffee, one thing I can’t over with this product is that it feels WASTEFUL to me…  I don’t think you can RECYCLE it, even though it has the look and feel of being made out of recycled material (the matte finish tan color, you know the one).  But the underside of the package is shiny see through plastic, and the inside is filled with coffee grounds, so I don’t think you can just put this in a RECYCLING bin, can you???  It doesn’t mention that it is recyclable anywhere on the Danish made container, and I think if it WERE they would tout that.

Back of the package
Now, onto the taste:  it is a LOT better tasting than I thought it would be.  It is a cute concept.  But I kept thinking of what would be a good USE for it…  At first I thought CAMPING (we are not campers).  Wouldn’t this be good for camping??  But then I thought, people who are real campers probably already have well thought out coffee making plans and they wouldn’t need to keep a chichi little TJ’s coffee making system in their gear…

We are not CAMPERS, but once we tried GLAMPING, which was hilariously fun.  We were right outside Yellowstone.  Here we are relaxing on our glamping deck drinking morning coffee (that we didn't brew, the glamping office did).
Then I thought – HOTEL ROOM!  You could use this in a hotel, where the coffee they give you in the room is always too weak.  But then I thought, nah, that’s sorta stupid, too.  Are you going to PACK this TJ’s thing in your SUITCASE for using in a hotel, even though the hotel is going to supply you with coffee anyway???  Highly doubt it…  (David begged to differ here and thought that maybe it would be worth having these in your suitcase, then I pointed out that if you were that desperate, you could just go to a coffee shop…)

So I wracked my brain some more…  HOW ABOUT THIS!  Your electricity goes out…  Your only coffee maker is electric  But you do have to have a way to somehow heat water to make this coffee…  Yeah, that is a use for it.  (Or you could just make tea…)

Overall, this was better coffee than I expected.  We made two cups with it even though we didn’t put in enough water to get to the “mild” marking.  So it made more coffee than we expected and it tasted better than we expected.  It is an ingenious little system.  It ends up looking like if you bought a box or bag of brewed coffee at Einstein Brothers or Starbucks and poured it right out of the bag, except you only have enough for one or two people, not a whole conference room full of co-workers.  I think TJ’s is trying to play on the current trend of POUR OVER COFFEE being all the rage.  Work it, Trader Joe’s!!

Ahhh, morning coffee
David:  “I think this is sort of like one of those sippy things for kids where you stick the straw inside it – are they called tetra packs?  Pyramid shaped designs (EDITOR’S NOTE – he means like Capri Sun packs).  It required a lot of finagling to make - you have to hold it open and there is the possibility of pouring boiling hot water over your fingers…  Though I guess if you set it on a flat surface maybe you wouldn’t have to hold it open as you poured.

The taste is ok.  It is very mild and smooth.  If you like your coffee like you like your women – mild and smooth (and in a bag) – then this is for you!

I give this a 3.75.  It is very nice, but entirely unnecessary.”

Susan again, I was thinking about giving this a 3.75, too, but then I thought I should bump my score up to a 4.  I mean, it is an INGENIOUS idea…  I was worried that we wouldn’t know how much water to pour in, but when we looked on the back TJ’s had thought about that and marked the package quite clearly.  It seems like they thought of everything when making this.  It is pretty cool.  It is ingenious, but unnecessary.

I thought of another use!!!!  Say you are an AirBnB host, right??  You put one of these in the guest room to welcome people and let them make fancy coffee!!  Only, that is silly, too, cuz they still have to be able to make the hot water to pour in it, so you might as well just put a little coffee maker in the guest room!!

Wait – BACKPACKING!!!!  What if you are going on a long backpacking trip, and you think, “This is gonna be a looooong hike, I am going to need coffee during it!!”.  It would seem that might be a use for it, but no, cuz you still have to BOIL WATE, meaning you need to make a campfire and bring a pot or something to heat the water, so you could just MAKE THE COFFEE IN THAT!

I am trying to hard to find a good use for this puppy, but I just can’t…

Maybe if you live in a TINY HOUSE or an IKEA SIZED APARTMENT??
DAVID HAS AN IDEA!!  “When you go to Ikea and they have those little model apartments that are, like, 250 square feet…  Let’s say you live in one of THOSE!!!  And you do not have room for a coffee maker.  THIS COFFEE MAKING BAG IS FOR THAT SITUATION!”    I hate to burst his bubble, but even in that situation, you still need a teapot to heat the coffee.  And if you don’t have room for a coffee pot, you probably don’t have room for a teapot…  Sigh.

Trader Joe’s corporate, if you are reading this, please tell us:  WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR THIS FUNKY, INNOVATIVE PRODUCT??  Like, where should we be using it?  I want to be a fan, but for now it just seems a bit wasteful.

Day 363 - European Cookie Collection and ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW PROJECT!

I HATE ENDINGS.

I hate them!!

Sure, I know most people dislike “goodbyes” and don’t like it when they eat the last bite of their ice cream sundae.  But I seriously have an aversion to endings.  Examples:

·         It is December 28th.  David and I have not opened a single Christmas gift from one another yet.  Long into the New Year some of these gifts will remain in their pristine wrapping and eventually join the big pile of other “unopened gifts” at the Big Yellow House.

This photo is NOT taken before Christmas...  This is 3 days AFTER Christmas.

  •  Remember when everyone was raving about the ending of “Breaking Bad”?  Yeah – we have    not watched the conclusion yet.  In fact, just this month we started in on the last season.  We have a couple left.  We will stretch them out…  (Same held true for another show we loved, “House”.  Everyone else knew what happened to Gregory House at the end about two years before we did.  Quite literally.)

·         I get sad at the beginning of every autumn.  I really like autumn, mind you, but I am sad because of the ending of summer…

This is the view out our kitchen window every fall - our neighbor's tree is gorgeous, yet still the season makes me sad.  Summer ENDS...
I am sure there are many more examples in my life of things that I put off ENDING.

To be clear, ending things is not the same as FINISHING things.  Finishing allows you to check the item off your “to do” list.  Finishing can be satisfying.  ENDING is different – ending is somehow much more final than a simple finish.  Ending means that thing/event/season is over.  Ending brings with it a sense of finality and often a tinge of sadness.

And so this project is nearly ending.

It is day 363 of 365.  To be honest, when I had this crazy idea and began it, I didn’t really know if I could do it.  You may not realize it, but committing to do something every single day is huge, at least for me it is!  Sure, you do things like brush your teeth every day, and most of us cook every day.   But to me those are not commitments, those are just LIFE.  This blog, these reviews, these were a commitment.  And for a commitment phobic such as myself, a huge commitment!

Have I told you that we lived together for 12 years before getting married?  Yeah, we BOTH dislike commitments...
As you may have noticed if you looked back to the start of this project, at the beginning my entries were more perfunctory – shop, photograph the product, eat it, and review it.  But as the year went on and I got more and more “into” the blog, I started to sort of share my life with you all.  That was a new experience for me, and sometimes it was a bit scary to be vulnerable, but most of the time I really loved sharing photos of details with you of “real life” stuff, not just Trader Joe’s things.

So today is not the very last day of the project.  But I feel like I have to sort of brace myself, get myself ready, for the end, which is why I am taking time to write this today.

Here’s the deal:  I feel like I enjoyed this project because for the first time in my life really, I had a clear beginning, middle, and end to something.  I knew exactly how many days were going to be committed to this.  Trust me, there were times when I thought I was in way over my head, but knowing the finish date kept a light at the end of the tunnel.

And now as the days have wound down I have been getting sad, but at the same time a little piece of me is happy.  And thrilled.  Thrilled that in just a couple of days I will be able to say “I DID IT!!”.  When I started this I had no idea that “365” things were a trend.  Did you know that it is sort of “hip” now to do something every day??  I didn’t, until my sister-in-law told me about an article in the Washington Post last month where they interviewed other “every day of 2015” people.  One guy is eating a taco every day (I am glad I am not him).  One woman is making a different tiny chair every day!!  The article was interesting for me – I could relate to a lot of what the other people were saying.  (You can read it here )

Thank you to everyone who has been commenting, “DON’T STOP BLOGGING!” and “You know you are not gonna stop, you are in too deep now…”.  Your comments have made me smile and also made me proud.

I must stop.  I can’t write everyday anymore.  Each entry takes me on average 45 – 50 minutes to compose and upload, and that is after already spending time shopping, cooking, tasting, and photographing stuff.  I have LOVED this project, it has been such a motivation for me this year, but it has also taken a lot of my time and more importantly, my creative energy.  I promise that I will write PERIODIC reviews and post them here – like, when we run into something at Trader Joe’s that we adore (or makes us gag J ).  But I can’t commit to doing it every day.

BUT (as PeeWee Herman says, “Everyone I know has a big butt…”) – BUT – I am starting a new journey.

In thinking about this whole Trader Joe’s adventure, one thing became clear to me – if I am putting something out there into the world – I want it to have a PURPOSE.  Sure, this blog has the purpose of informing people about stuff at TJ’s, and perhaps a “sub-purpose” (is that a word?) to entertain and make people laugh.  And maybe this is the stuff that is supposed to get talked over with a therapist J but I think I am looking for a higher purpose at this point.

So I have decided to be a KINDNESS ACTIVIST

Do you want to be a kindness activist, too?
“A HUH???” you might be thinking.  A KINDNESS ACTIVIST.  I am going to write about kindness.  Not “random acts of kindness”, but intentional, purposeful kindness.  And not hoity toity kindness on the religious scale, but everyday kindness that we all give and witness.

I just think I would like to spread a little kindness.  I recently realized that kindness is a heck of a lot like peanut butter, it needs to be SPREAD.  So I hope to encourage people to SPREAD the hell out of it!!

Oh it’s still gonna be irreverent.  It’s still gonna be silly.  And it’s still gonna involve the adventures of Susan and David.  But I hope it will involve the adventures of others, too.

Wanna join?  I hope you will.  I have loved “getting to know” you through your comments this year.  I am in the process of setting up the Kindness Activist stuff (guys – there are going to be BUTTONS – I mean that is some serious stuff, eh – real-life-pin-to-your-shirt-or-backpack BUTTONS!!).  I am not committing to writing every day, but I am committing to being an activist.  And committing to encouraging others to be activists alongside me.

Let’s do it!!!!  Here are the details:

(I am trying to get tech savvy here – wish me luck!)

Please comment here or send me an email at the address above to nominate someone you know as a kindness activist.  And I hope it is YOU – you can totally share with me things YOU did out of kindness!  I would love to write about them!!  (And you know you want a kindness activist button...)

Enough kindness for now, let’s get to today’s REVIEW!

European Cookie Collection – this is a special red tin of 12 varieties of cookies from Belgium.  It is a holiday/seasonal item, meaning TJ’s only carries it for a short time, and when they are gone, they are gone (until next year during the holiday season, when hopefully they will have them again!).

This was a flyer item AND a seasonal item - double special :)
The packaging says a serving size is 3 cookies, but if you like them do not fret – there are “around 34” servings in the big a** tin!!

We decided to buy these cookies when a Trader Joe’s employee at the Bailey’s Crossroads, VA store pointed them out to us.  He told us that he remember another customer who bought a DOZEN TINS of them at once!  I asked if they were for gifts, but nope, he loved them so much that he was going to just store them and eat them over the year!!  (Note:  I see that our tin says it is best eaten before August 2016 so that would give us 8.5 months to eat these!  Trust me, they won’t last that long.)

Aren't they PRETTY?  One variety up in the corner spot was broken, but the rest are in perfect shape
There are 12 different cookies included here.  I have eaten TWO and I really liked them!  One was the small round one with coconut on top and it was deeelicious!  They taste like “European cookies”, but in the good sense of the word.  I say that because we have eaten some European desserts that are “all about the pretty” at the expense of the TASTE.  These cookies are just as tasty as they are lovely!

A downside for us tonight is that we are eating them in FLORIDA where it has been around 80 degrees.  We have the air conditioner set to 79 degrees, so it is not, how shall I say, cool in here.  That means the chocolate is a bit melty.  But we cannot blame the cookies for that at all!  That’s all on us. I give them a 4.75.

A cookie display on one of my favorite plates!
David says, “I agree, these are good.  The ones that are covered with chocolate, the chocolate is kind of more overpowering than the cookie that is inside.  Not that that is BAD, but for the Philistine that I am I sometimes wonder, “What is this cookie??  Is it a sugar cookie?  Is it a shortbread cookie that I am eating on the inside??”.  But some of them have hints of something or other in them and each of them is distinct I guess.  So that’s good!

And the cookies without chocolate on them are also nice.  They are all really cruuunchy.  Not in a hard way, but in a crackly, kind of CRUNCHY way which is good.  They all feel like they’ve got a lot of BUTTER in them, which is also good.  And not underdone at all – they are perfectly done.  It’s a nice collection.  I give it a 4.5.”

We were psyched to get these
Editor’s note:  I asked David if he would buy these again next year if Trader Joe’s has them, and he said he would get them again if he was certain that he would have people to share them with.   He says, “Cuz if no one else is eatin’ ‘em, I’m EATIN’ this whole collection!!”.  Well we are going to share these, because tonight we are bringing some to a luau at the neighbor’s house!  Yes siree, nothing says “LUAU” more than European cookies covered in melting chocolate!

Day 346 - Giant Greek Green Olives

So MO, a Trader Joe’s Bailey’s Crossroads employee, has really caused a problem in our house.

Mo was working at the sample station the other night when we were in the store.  He was serving something, I can’t even remember what, but in talking to him he asked if we had tried the new olives yet.  Nope, we hadn’t.  We had looked at them, but the jar is SO LARGE that it just seemed like too big of a commitment to get one.

So Mo opens a jar.  And David eats an olive.

At our store these are on an end cap - a section of "new products".  Looks like they are also a Flyer Item this month.
Thanks Mo, we now have FOUR BIG JARS of these huge ass green olives at our house J

This is David after Mo gave him a taste of these olives.  Yeah, he was excited.
And look - he has new glasses!
We bought one jar that night.  We stopped and talked to another employee after the olives were in our cart already and he saw them and said something about having bought MULTIPLE jars to save them (they are seasonal and TJ’s won’t have them for long).  Well, that got David to thinking…  So when we were shopping tonight, 3 more jars were purchased.

I mean heck, they are OLIVES.  They are SEALED.  It is not like they are gonna go off!  We will store the unopened ones in the basement where it stays pretty cool.  And David will be a happy man while he has these “in stock” at home.

Here is David when we went back and he purchased THREE MORE JARS...
The label says “Gigantic, meaty, fresh tasting olives (with pits)”.  That is a good summary.

Here is my review – these olives are HUGE.  The jar itself is big (1 lb 5 oz), but really the jar has to be big because the olives inside are so large.  The first thing you notice (after you get over the size of these suckers) is the color.  They almost seem an unnatural shade of green.  They have sea salt, but they are some of the least salty olives I have ever had.  The least salty, but the most meaty.  These are seriously meaty, folks.

They are soft but not at all mushy.  They are very good, but not my favorite olives in the entire world.  I like them, but would I stock up on 4 jars if it was just me I was feeding?  Probably not.  I would get one jar, maybe 2.  I would rate them a 4.25.

I served them (in my fancy olive dishes) the other night at a birthday party dinner.
Now here is what David, who is in love with these olives and might just marry them if he were not already hooked up with me, says about them:  “Soft.  Fleshy.  Ample.  Delicious.  Only slightly salty, and yet still very flavorful.  This was advertised by the guy at TJ’s (editor’s note:  see above, it was Mo) as the best olive he had ever tasted, and I would have to concur.

Each olive is, of course, different and delightful in its own way, like children.  But when eating this olive one is filled only with the impression that one is eating the best olive ever made.  And, that can’t be true, because there is a whole jar full of olives just like it!!!   I GIVE THESE A 5.”

See??  I told you he loves these.  He actually tricked me into bringing him the open jars of olives before he would give me his reviewing, saying he “needed” to eat another one to be able to tell me his opinion.  Yeah, right, you just wanted another olive, dude.

Price - $6.99 (which at first seemed pricey to us, but when you consider how many olives you get and compare the price to other olives it is actually cheap)
Rating – oh hell…  I was going to average the two ratings together, but David loves these so much I think I should just use HIS rating – THEY GET A 5 J

P.S. – Thanks Mo!!!  You are a super employee.  Your smile, chat with us, and willingness to give us a taste let us discover something we wouldn’t have otherwise bought.  And David is certainly thankful to have found these olives.

Day 307 - Pizza Dough

Before I review today’s product, let me give a shout out to my cashier at TJ’s (Bailey’s Crossroads) tonight.  The whole store seemed a bit “down” tonight, maybe it is because I rushed in half hour before closing time, or maybe  because they have been super busy changing over all of their Halloween displays to Thanksgiving displays.  But no employees were smiley or friendly like they usually are, except my pretty blue haired cashier.  I didn’t see her nametag but my receipt identifies her as “R. Sydney”.  She was very sweet and friendly.  And she did something that TJ’s employees always do – when she was checking me out and noticed something wasn’t right with a product, she gave a quick shout to a co-worker nearby, held up the product, and said, “Grab me one of these, please”.  And quick as you please, without me even being aware of what was wrong with my pasta, her co-worker brought back another one and we were in business.  Isn’t that great??  They CARE.  They even CHECK YOUR EGGS, people, to make sure none are broken.

Yes, Trader Joe’s cares.  Thanks R. Sydney!

Now, onto the review!  PIZZA DOUGH!

Hey, hey, hey!  It's a PIZZA!
We really like Trader Joe’s pizza dough.  “Why?” you ask.  Because it gives us an excuse to MAKE PIZZA!  We are one of the very few households in America that rarely consumes pizza.  Like, we eat so little pizza that if we called Domino’s for delivery, our address wouldn’t automatically pop up associated with our phone number.  I KNOOOOW – bizarre, eh??  J

But when we buy this pizza dough (which is probably ever 3 or 4 months), we make our own pizza and it is lovely!  Before we bought this dough we almost NEVER made pizza.  One other reason that I have always liked this dough is because I enjoy watching David stretch it out into a flat circle, it looks so much like a “David thing” that I thought he liked doing it.  Only the last time we made this and I mentioned that, he informed me that stretching out the dough is actually sort of stressful for him (he doesn’t want to mess it up I guess).  Oops, sorry David!

Stretch that dough David!
One pizza, comin' up!

Our most recent pizza invention was:  dough, homemade pesto from our garden basil, mushrooms, red onion, green pepper from our garden, tomato from our garden (end of October, end of garden season in Northern Virginia), garlic, and THREE different kinds of cheese!  We had leftover parmesan from pesto making so we threw that on, and we bought Romano recently when David made eggplant parmesan, so we threw that on, and we topped it all off with mozzarella.   Yummmmm – cheeeese…

Here it is before going into the oven - ahhhh pizza perfection!

But I digress, this is supposed to be about the pizza DOUGH.  It is a fine dough.  I have no problems with it.  It is FUN to put all of the toppings on yourself.  I am a fan!

David says:  “GREAT PIZZA CRUST.  Moreover, the CONCEPT of being able to buy a pizza crust, have it in your fridge for a few days, take it out whenever you are ready, and have a pizza crust and throw WHATEVER YOU WANT on it – FABULOUS.  Try it!  You will love it.  All you need is something on the bottom – tomato, or pesto, or I guess maybe you could even just do olive oil or you could put a cheese sauce on there!  Then throw every vegetable you can think of on there!  Maybe add some olives.  Top it with cheese.  A sprinkle of olive oil.  Put it in the oven – it’ll be FABULOUS!  The thing about this crust is that it tastes great.  It tastes like “homemade” (that is if you were an Italian in a pizza kitchen) crust!  And you can feel it, you can smell it in your hands as you are dealing with the ball of dough.  It is stretchy.  One caveat:  do not forget that you need to take it out of the fridge 20 – 30 minutes before you want to work with it.  You know, if you are hungry you are gonna feel the temptation to go, “Ya know, it is squishy, it is just outta the fridge, I can work with it…”.  But it will be so much more pliable if you let it sit at room temperature for 20 – 30 minutes.  It will make it all easier.”

HOMEMADE PIZZZZZZA - this is the "before" photo
And you will feel kind of proud ‘cuz you made it YOURSELF.  It is also a good way to get rid of vegetables that you have that might be getting ready to go off.

We are a fan of this dough.  Find it over by the cheese at Trader Joe’s.  It makes for a fun dinner.  If you have kids you could separate the dough into little balls and have the kids make their own pizzas.  I remember doing that once at a party as a kid and I was ultra proud of making my own dinner.

David says that this dough is a gateway and the key item to the whole EVENT of being able to make your own pizza (maybe as a group!) with fresh ingredients and eat it!  It is fabulous.
This is one "after" photo....

And the true "AFTER" photo...
We give this pizza dough a top rating, both for the TASTE and for the EXPERIENCE that it provides of making your own pizza.

Sure, the dough doesn't have tons of ingredients, but for what it saves you in stress and effort, and for the delicious taste, and mostly for the EXCUSE TO MAKE YOUR OWN PIZZA PARTY, this price is crazy cheap.
