Day 102 - Vegetable Pad Thai

I love Pad Thai – I often order it when we go out for Thai food.  So I would really like to find a great frozen Pad Thai to eat at home.  Sadly, this is not it.  It isn’t awful, but it is nowhere near the taste of Pad Thai you get at a restaurant.

Try as I might, I could not get mine to look as pretty as it does on the bos
I think part of the problem is cooking it in the microwave (which is the first method listed on the packaging) – the noodles just get gloppy and yucky.  Even with a large amount of stirring around it didn’t ever get “saucy” or appetizing.  And let me just say – there is a reason “bean sprouts” are listed first on the ingredients – this dish is chock full of ‘em.  Sadly, they are sort of the stringy sprouts, not the robust, tasty ones.  Drat.

Here is how it looks in REAL LIFE - after lots of stirring to try and make it prettier (and tastier).  Note the Sriracha bottle...
I used copious amounts of Trader Joe’s Sriracha (which got a glowing review on day 45 of this blog) and that helped make the meal more palatable.

Cheap lunch, but not that great
In a nutshell – this will fill you up if you need to eat a quick lunch, but it will not leave you begging for more.

Price – $2.69

Rating – 2.75

  3. Hello. This is currently several years later. I just ate Trader Joe's Pad Thai, googled "why is trader joes pad thai so good," and found your blog post. I would like to share that your post is woefully misguided. Let me preface the rest of this post by declaring that I have had several alcoholic beverages already. But I just ate my (estimated) 12th serving of this pad thai after discovering it several weeks ago, and am considering going back to the freezer to cook another (I'm stocked). You say this does not leave you begging for more? I beg to differ. I have never felt more personally attached to a food. Have they perhaps changed the recipe in the last several years since this post was written? I am not sure. All I know is, I am writing this comment to share to any other people who might take this post as advice not to purchase the pad thai: TRY IT. What it lacks in authenticity, it makes up for in its delectable blend of flavors. The author is correct about their assessment of the meal's contents (the bean sprouts, etc) and to that I say, IS THAT SO WRONG? This is amazing pad thai, and I can eat 4 of them for the same price I would pay for a restaurant pad thai. BUY. IT. P.S. I hope you can understand that this post was made in jest. I see that your blog contains a ton of interesting food reviews... I will have to look at them further! Although I'm not sure if I should trust you now after reading this one!!!! Either way, future readers: BUY THE PAD THAI. P.P.S. The only bad thing about this pad thai is that it always (always) includes exactly three pieces of tofu. No more, no less. If you get more, consider playing the lottery, because that is a result of pure luck. I would like more tofu. But I love the pad thai as it is. I think I am going to go make more now. Bye!
